Your wedding budget; the most important step in planning a wedding

14 April 2011 08h30 | Ekudeni

Your wedding should be at the top of your list of “most exciting days in my life.” The planning of this day can be stressful and with all the choice and variety out there, making decisions can be difficult. A wedding budget is the number one step to take in the wedding planning process.

Old traditions no longer stand and with many couples getting married at an older age, the father of the bride is no longer responsible for the finances of the wedding. Couples prefer to set up a wedding budget and use their own personal finances for the costs of the wedding.

Setting out a wedding budget is essential in order to protect the pocket from any unknown expenditure. When planning the wedding budget it’s always a good idea to start with the basics and either add or take away from that.

The most expensive point on the wedding budget will probably be the wedding venue/ reception. It is for this reason, that finding a wedding venue, booking it and putting a deposit down as soon as possible is important.

*Wedding tip*

Hiring a venue during the week is always cheaper than hiring it over the weekend. If couples have a tight wedding budget, this may be an option for them and will then allow them to spend a little extra on other areas.

The basic wedding budget breakdown

The wedding budget should be broken down into various categories. This allows the couple to determine what costs are involved under which category.

  • All printing costs
  • Wedding fees (legal documents, pastor etc)
  • Flowers
  • Gifts
  • Wedding attire (bride, groom, bridesmaids, made of honour, groomsmen, best man)
  • Entertainment
  • Photographer/ videographer
  • Catering (food and beverage)
  • Transport
  • Extras

It is always a good idea to have an “extra” category because costs and hidden costs will, without a doubt pop up all over the show.

With so many big and small items to consider, wedding budgets should be carefully planned out so that couples do not forget costs or items.

Sticking to the wedding budget will not only ensure that you do not over- spend, it will also allow you to spend what you can afford.

Every couple deserves that dream wedding so planning properly right from the beginning will assist the couple in achieving that dream.
