Planning a wedding: part three. The duties of the wedding party
08 March 2010 12h30 | Ekudeni
Generally when planning a wedding, those who the bride and groom choose to be a part of the wedding ceremony are given duties that assist the couple in planning the wedding and of course assist on the actual day. It is entirely up to the couple to decide how little or how much they want to involve their friends and family.
Choosing important people for your wedding can be tricky. Whether it’s deciding on who will be your Maid of Honour, Bridesmaids, Best Man or Groomsmen, the decision is never easy. Here are some tips to assist with the decision.
- Maid of Honour/ Best Man- first choice should be a sibling. If not then a very close friend/ family member.
- Choosing friends/ family who are reliable is important.
- Choose people who are able to assist with planning. Do they have the time?
- Choose people who are going to respect your decisions. They should suggest where necessary but not try take your limelight.
Planning a wedding involves layers of duties. It’s always a relief on the bride and groom if their wedding party assists where possible. Depending on how large and detailed the wedding is, the number of people in the wedding party will vary and so will the duties of the wedding party.
Maid of Honor/ bridesmaids
- Organise Bachelorette party
- Accompanies bride to dress fittings
- Assists with choosing accessories etc
- Helps bride dress
- Keeps flower girls etc organised and ready
- Maid of honor holds bride’s bouquet whilst ring is being put on
Best Man/ Groomsmen
- Best Man is the Groom’s right hand
- Organises Bachelors party
- Organises wedding car
- Best Man carries rings
- Best Man proposes a toast to bridesmaids
Other people who are traditionally part of a wedding include:
- Flower girl/ Confetti girl
- Page boy
- Master of ceremonies (sometimes the best man)
- Speakers
Of course there are no rules as to how little or how involved a wedding party needs to be. A wedding party can be a huge help in planning a wedding but often a couple may prefer to do everything themselves or use a wedding planner. All that matters is that the bride and groom have the people most important to them at their wedding.
